BeingMaryJaneEvery influential television show becomes known for something other than its plot and characters. The Cosby Show was known for its portrayal of middle class, Black culture. Scandal is recognized for its fashion. And last night, Being Mary Jane stood out for its musical selection. Perfectly pairing music with a script is nothing new to Akil Productions. Mara Brock Akil and her husband, Salim Akil, have previously done so on BET’s The Game, but what grabbed my attention last night was the diversity in their selections. Their team didn’t just rely on hip-hop and R&B to tell Mary Jane’s story, a move that would have been expected for a BET-produced series. Instead they ventured into other genres of music and found selections that told Mary Jane’s story and engaged their audience. As a lover of music, I was ecstatic, and I can’t wait to see what Akil Productions does next week.

If you’re like me, you turned off your television last night needing to know the song titles and artists featured in last night’s episode. Lucky for you, I found them. Enjoy.
